From the classical era to the eve of the Industrial Revolution, humanistic education has always been the core and main body of education in both the East and the West. Since the modern era, several major scientific and technological revolutions have not only driven the leap of productivity but also disrupted the original educational structure of humanity. Looking back at history, the first-class universities that were the first to find an appropriate balance between science and technology and humanities not only supported the remarkable development of their respective countries in the new stage but also, with the rise of these countries, became the most advanced university models, serving as a crucial guarantee for the sustainable development of human civilization. At present, the rapid advancement of science and technology has made human tools for transforming the world unprecedentedly powerful, but the spiritual power of self-cognition has stagnated. In this sense, the mission of the humanities is to enable humanity to enhance its ability of self-understanding and self-control, that is, self-awareness and self-strengthening. Today, with the rapid development of science and technology, global higher education is generally facing the dilemma of the decline of the humanistic spirit. In order to achieve connotative development and create a world-leading model, Chinese universities must take the initiative to seek a new balance between science and technology and humanities. This is not only related to the optimization of the disciplinary layout but also involves the return to the essence of education and the protection of the spiritual homeland. |
